PoE camera or wifi camera?

A PoE camera receives power and network via one network cable. That cable runs to a PoE switch or recorder. This ensures the camera has a permanent connection and you don't need to attach a separate adapter to the camera. For permanent security, that is usually the most reliable solution.

A wifi camera uses a wireless network, but usually still needs power. This sometimes makes installation easier, but it doesn't solve everything. You still need to think about power supply, range, walls, distance from the router and what happens if the wifi network is crowded or unstable.

With cameras, you want stability. Live footage, back-viewing, and alerts should work at the exact moment you need them. PoE is less dependent on Wi-Fi coverage and is less prone to interference from thick walls, neighbor networks, or devices that use a lot of bandwidth.

Maintenance is also simpler. A PoE camera can be powered via the switch or recorder and is often easier to manage centrally. With multiple cameras around a home or business property, that is more manageable than separate Wi-Fi devices with their own power supplies.

Wi-Fi can be a good choice for temporary applications, rental homes, or places where wiring is really not feasible. Think of a standalone camera in a barn with good Wi-Fi coverage, or a situation where only basic surveillance is needed.

We will then test the signal beforehand at the location where the camera will be placed. A phone with full Wi-Fi bars doesn't always give enough signal; cameras continuously send images, so they require more from the connection than simply browsing or texting.

If you want to continuously record on a NVR, wired connections are almost always more interesting. The connection is more stable and the recorder can continue to find the cameras more reliable. With Wi‑Fi cameras, we often see problems after router changes, password changes, or Wi‑Fi boosters that otherwise react differently.

For cloud storage or app-only use, wifi may be sufficient, but you must accept that your security becomes dependent on the internet and wireless coverage. That shouldn't be a problem, as long as you make that choice consciously.

For fixed outdoor or company cameras, we recommend PoE where that is as convenient as possible. For a single standalone camera or a doorbell, Wi-Fi can be fine, provided the power supply and range are properly configured.

During the consultation, we look at cable routes, meter box location, recorder location, and network. Often, it turns out that cabling is more manageable than expected, especially if the installation is planned well from the start.

A good preparation starts with three questions: what exactly do you want to be able to see, when do you want to receive a notification and how long do you want to be able to watch the videos?
