How many cameras do you need around the house?

There is no standard number of cameras that fits every home. A detached house with one front door and a compact backyard requires a different approach than a corner house with driveway, gate, and side path. The goal is not to install as many cameras as possible, but to precisely capture the spots where someone logically comes onto the property.

Therefore, we first look at entrances, walking routes, and sightlines. A camera above the front door often provides recognition, while a camera aimed at the garden or driveway mainly gives an overview. You should not mix those functions together, because a wide overview image is not always suitable for clearly seeing faces or license plates.

The front door, back door, gate, storage room and driveway are usually the first places to assess. Most movement takes place there, and you want to be able to see who has been there afterwards. In apartments, it often refers to the entrance, gallery or storage room, while in detached houses the side paths and property boundary become more important.

Proper placement prevents one camera from having to do too much at once. If a camera must film both the front door, the entire front yard, and the street, you often sacrifice detail. It is better to choose a clear task for each camera: recognize, provide an overview, or cover a blind spot.

More cameras sound safe, but can also cause unrest. You get more images, more alerts, and more places you have to manage. A set of three or four well-placed cameras works better in many homes than six cameras that are too high, facing the sun, or filming unnecessary public spaces.

Mounting height also plays a role. Too low is sensitive to sabotage, but too high mainly gives branches and few faces. During installation we seek a balance between protection, recognizability and neat cable finish.

The number of cameras also depends on storage. Four cameras that are continuously recording require more storage space than two cameras with smart detection. If you mainly want alerts for people or vehicles, the correct detection zone is at least as important as the number of cameras.

We set up cameras so that alerts remain useful. A camera that reports every passing car or moving branch will be ignored after a week. Good security is not just looking, but especially getting the correct alert at the right time.

For many homes, two to four cameras is a realistic starting point: front door, rear, driveway or side path. Larger plots of land, shops on the premises or shared entrances require a separate assessment. The best choice depends on what you want to be able to see if something happens.

Therefore, have the coverage signed in advance. Then you can immediately see where blind spots remain, which camera has which target, and how we take into account neighbors and public roads. This prevents disappointment after installation.
