An alarm system works with two types of detection: shield detection and space detection. Shield detection is located on the exterior shell of your home. Magnetic contacts on the front door, rear door, and open windows report the moment something opens, and glass break detectors react to the sound of breaking glass. The advantage is that you receive the alert before anyone enters. Space detection looks at what is happening inside. A motion sensor registers heat movement in a room. Place it in the places where someone needs to pass: the hallway, the hallway, the living room near the garden doors. You don't need to provide one for every room, just the walking paths. In addition, you can expand the system with smoke and water detectors, which also report if the burglar alarm is off. Where you hang a sensor determines how many you need. A motion sensor in the hallway that sees both the front door and the staircase does the job of two poorly placed sensors. Pay attention to heat sources in the line of sight, such as a radiator, a stove or a window with direct sunlight. They are a common cause of false alarms. If you have a dog or cat, choose sensors with pet-friendly detection and hang them up as instructed by the manufacturer, with the sensitive part above the animal. For animals that stay on the floor, that usually works well. Cats that jump onto shelves and window sills are more difficult. In that space, it is often wiser to only secure the windows and doors and leave the motion sensor off.

Sensors are grouped into zones, and that arrangement determines what happens when you turn them on. In practice, you use three settings: fully on when no one is home, partially on when you are home, and off. Without a thoughtful zone arrangement, there is little left of that middle setting, while you actually want to be able to use the alarm at the times when someone is indeed home. Shared security is the setting for the evening and night. Only the shield detection on doors and windows is active, while the motion sensors inside are off. You just walk to the kitchen or upstairs, but as soon as someone opens a window, the alarm goes off. If you leave a garden door or skylight slightly open, then keep that sensor deliberately outside the nightstand. Otherwise, the system will not be activated again after a week. In addition to the regular zones, there are zones that remain active always, even when the alarm is off. Sabotage of a sensor, smoke detection and water detection are part of this. Furthermore, you set an in‑and‑out time: the seconds you have to enter and exit. Short enough to stay useful, long enough not to end every home arrival with a siren. Activation can be done with a control panel at the door, with a tag or remote control, or via the app on your phone. Choose the control that the whole household also really uses. A system that only you can operate often remains unused on the days you are away.

An interior siren is intended to break into a house. The sound inside is designed to make the unpleasantness persist unnoticed. An exterior siren, usually with flashing lights, targets the surroundings and makes it clear where the alarm is coming from. Do not expect neighbors to always respond. The siren is aimed at deterrence; the alert on your phone ensures you know. Alerts arrive in the app based on events: which alarm was triggered, in which zone, and at what time. What matters more than the alert itself is what you can do with it. Without a visual cue, you only know something has happened, and you are left with the choice to drive back or leave it. With a camera in the same zone, you can watch and assess the alert yourself before deciding what to do. Therefore, alarms and cameras are often installed together, in the same app. The detection does what it is meant for—quickly reporting the alert—and the camera provides the image you use to verify that report.
