Fiber optic can be part of a camera network over a terrain or between buildings. The connection does not only consist of the fiber optic cable: connection modules, network equipment and power on the camera side must connect to each other.
Determine which buildings or technical cabinets are being connected and how many cameras will be coming there now and in the future. Bring available pipes, conduits, and accessibility for maintenance. Also have existing fiber inventory listed before new cabling is ordered.
The used fiber, connectors and optical modules must fit together and with the network equipment. Request an overview of those components. A free optical connection on a switch does not mean that every module or available fiber is suitable.
The optical data connection does not replace the electrical power supply of a camera. Determine whether a suitable PoE switch or other power supply is provided at the end. Check where that equipment is placed and how it remains accessible. This way, the power supply will not be missing after establishing the data connection.
Ask upon delivery which connection has been tested and how the end points are labeled. Keep measurement and connection data at the installation. This helps with a later expansion or damage to the track. A camera that provides a short-term image is a useful functional test, but not complete documentation of the installed fiber connection.
Test simultaneous streams, recording and playback from the standard user environment. Document who is responsible for fiber optic, switches and recorder. In case of a failure, the point of contact must be able to follow the entire chain without having to keep searching between suppliers.
Not without appropriate optical network provision. The data connection and power supply must be converted or provided via suitable equipment.
This must be assessed based on type, connections, condition and the desired network equipment.
