An IP address makes a network camera accessible within the network. A fixed address can be useful when a recorder approaches the camera on that address. However, the choice must match the network on which the camera is actually connected: directly to an NVR can be another network than that of your router.
Use the existing recorder overview, the DHCP list of the router, or the manufacturer's official search program. Compare the device model and hardware address with your installation details. An unknown device found should not only be changed based on its name. First, note the current address and the connection on which the camera was found.
In a DHCP reservation, the device automatically retrieves network data, while the DHCP server for this device reserves the same address. In a manual address assignment, you record the data on the camera itself. Agree with the network administrator on which method will be used. Two separate administrators who assign addresses independently may unintentionally assign the same combination.
The address, subnet mask, and relevant gateway must match the chosen network configuration. Let's check if the intended address is available and not later assigned by DHCP to another device. Do not copy an address from an internet example: such an example does not indicate anything about the available addresses or network boundaries of your installation.
After a address change, the recorder may still search for the old address. Check the camera channel, any viewing software, and the management overview. Save the original settings so that a qualified administrator can retrieve what has been changed. A interrupted browser session immediately after saving can simply mean that you now need to open the device on the new address.
Check the live view and a new recording after the camera is reachable again. Also let it be assessed at a scheduled maintenance time whether the assignment remains after reconnecting. Note the address, hardware address, port and camera channel together; that makes a future router replacement much easier to investigate.
