An external PoE switch can consolidate camera connections outside the recorder. The camera then receives power via a suitable network port, while the NVR must be able to reach the image via the network. Both of those conditions must be checked.
Note which camera is connected to which switch port and how the switch is connected to the recorder's network. Plugging a cable into any random free port does not make that accessibility clear yet. Use names or labels for multiple switches so that later it is possible to find where a camera is actually connected.
Compare the camera's power specification with what the chosen port provides. Also look at the total available power of the switch. A free port does not automatically mean that there is still sufficient power left when all cameras are using their functions.
Let's check how the recorder adds a camera to the external network. The used protocol, access credentials, and supported features play a role in this process. A found device does not yet prove that audio, detection, and recording work in the same way as with directly connected cameras.
Check available recording channels, network capacity, and storage before expanding. The number of ports on the switch is not the same as the number of cameras that the recorder supports. Therefore, include both the switch and the NVR in the expansion overview.
View the live view and search for a new recording. Additionally, check the features for which you selected the camera. Save the port layout and camera channel along with the installation data. In case of failure, you can then compare them directly with another camera on the same switch.
